"Flex" refers to the foundational screen-and-cut action at the heart of the Flex Offense, a popular continuity offense. It typically involves a Flex Screen set on the baseline for a teammate performing a Flex Cut across the lane towards the basket. The beauty of the Flex system lies in its continuity: the player who sets the initial screen often immediately becomes the next player to receive a screen or make a cut, constantly forcing defensive rotations and creating opportunities for layups, short jumpers, or outside shots. This core action is designed to create constant movement and leverage off-ball screens to dislodge defenders and open up scoring lanes, making it challenging for defenses to anticipate and defend. It’s a rhythmic, sequential play that often cycles through different players in similar roles.
This specific sequence demonstrates the core of the Flex offense. Player 3 initiates with a [[flex-screen|Flex Screen]] for Player 4, who then performs a [[flex-cut|Flex Cut]] across the lane. Concurrently, Player 2 sets a [[pin-down|Down Screen]] for Player 3, who then uses it to make a [[straight-cut|Straight Cut]] to receive a pass from Player 1.
