The (No Middle) Shell Drill is a foundational defensive practice designed to instill the critical principle of preventing offensive penetration into the middle of the court. This drill focuses on teaching perimeter defenders how to consistently force offensive players towards the baseline, utilizing the sideline as an additional defender. It reinforces core defensive concepts such as proper closeouts, active help-side rotations, and effective communication, all while maintaining a disciplined 'no middle' philosophy.
The drill begins with offensive Player 1 chest passing to Player 2. Player 2 chest passes back to Player 1, who then chest passes to Player 3. Player 3 initiates a skip pass to Player 5, who then chest passes to Player 2. Player 2 follows with another skip pass to Player 4, who chest passes to Player 3, and Player 3 finishes by chest passing back to Player 1, completing a full defensive rotation.
