Upon contact from the offensive screener, the screen defender executes a precise maneuver: they open their hips, pivoting their body to face the basket, and immediately sprint backwards towards the rim. The primary objective is to maintain a direct line of sight and close proximity to the rolling screener, effectively "veering" away from the ball handler to deny an immediate post-up or rim run opportunity. This defensive tactic is predicated on a strategic concession: the screen defender intentionally yields space to the ball handler above the screen, typically at the foul line extended or higher. The underlying tactical rationale for deploying a Veer Back is the assessment that the rolling screener poses a more immediate and significant threat for an interior score or a deep catch than the ball handler's pull-up jumper or drive into a collapsing defense. This often occurs against dominant interior finishers, proficient pick-and-roll passing bigs, or when preventing direct rim attempts is prioritized over containing the ball handler's perimeter shot. The timing is critical; the hip turn and backward sprint must be synchronous with the screener's roll to prevent early separation.
